WHO IS SELENA MCDAY?
Raised in the Village of Harlem, Brooklyn and the "boogie-down Bronx", NYC, my earliest exposure to "The Music" was listening to my mother, an aspiring Blues singer during the 40's, 50's & 60's, learn songs and learning them right along with her as she rehearsed for performances. My life-long musical journey began in the Baptist church where around 9 years old I discovered my vocal potential after being chosen to replace a Sunday School choir member to sing the lead to "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands" in the Easter Sunday pageant. Since that first performance, I raised 3 children as a single parent (though the "rug burns" on my knees prove I wasn't really ever alone :>); won one battle with Cancer (March 21, 2016 marked my 30th "CF [Cancer Free] Birthday" of 1st battle); currently fighting my 2nd (diagnosed 12/12/12); earned a law degree from Washington, DC’s American University Washington College of Law (and to think, I dropped out of school in the 9th grade); hosted a series of shows for BET Television as a "VJ" on their ground-breaking program “Jazzy Vocals”; and shared the stage with the likes of Wynton, Branford and Ellis Marsalis, Kenny G, Clark Terry, Stanley Turrentine, Pieces Of A Dream, Dr. Billy Taylor, Harold Mabern (who helped me find my voice while a student in one of the Jazz Master's Inner City Music Workshops back in the mid-late 60's), Herbie Mann and some of Washington, DC's favorite vocalists & musicians including Jean Carne, Sylver Logan Sharp, Carl Anderson (“Jesus Christ Superstar” fame), David Dyson, Doug Carne, the late, great Bobby Parker, Memphis Gold, The Midnight Movers (Wilson Pickett's former backup band turned headliners) the late, great Godfather of Go-Go Chuck Brown, and a long list of the area's finest local musicians, too many to name.
As "life" would have it, while I was busy raising a family, finally getting an education, fighting "The Big C", and taking my classically trained 3 & 1/2 octave voice, eclectic fusion of Jazz/R&B/Neo-Soul/Blues song styling versatility and my, as Washington Post's Entertainment reporter Mike Joyce described it, "crowd pleas[ing], sensational ‘get down’ stage performances” all over the world including Cairo, Madrid, Istanbul, New York, Hilton Head Island and throughout the D.C. Metro area, to name a few places, my struggle to record my first album continued! Even after several "close encounters", including a 5 year recording deal at 15 years old, with Joe & Sylvia Robinson (of then All Platinum Records, later Sugar Hill Records), that never produced one recording by me before being "dropped" after label mates "The Moments'" career took off, less than two years into my contract; to an almost deal with a former Diana Ross agent (who’ll remain anonymous) that "fell through" during negotiations with the “wrong” manager; and a "Barter Agreement" with a "friend" for legal work in exchange for studio time (I provided some 30 hours of professional legal services, but never received the promised studio recording time) I never stopped believing in my dream, because I was more afraid to stop believing for fear of what would happen if I did!
After years of desperately seeking a "P & D” deal (“Production & Distribution”) because it appeared I wasn’t going to get the opportunity to record any other way, my son RiZion (aka Samuel Risien, Jr.) and we started our own small independent label HLFW (Honesty, Loyalty, Friends & Wealth) Recordings for the sole purpose of making both our music dreams come true. While still an undergrad student at Bowie State University in Maryland, RiZion surprised me with a home recording studio built with a little over $10K worth of recording equipment and explained how he knew of the sacrifices I’d made raising him and his sisters. He said he’d watched how hard I’d tried year after year, to make my dream of recording and sharing my music come true, so he decided he was going to make it happen. O-M-G, he did it! "CRY WITH A SMILE", my debut CD, and introduction to the world was co-written and produced by my multi-talented Artist/Writer/Producer/Engineer son RiZ! I had no idea I had to conceive, bear and raise my Producer, but I did! Oh, I LOVE ME SOME HIM!
